Set in wonderful parkland along the banks of the River Aire, Kirkstall Abbey boast historic architecture amid a haven of wildlife and greenery.


Recently benefiting from £5.5m lottery funded investment, Kirkstall Abbey provides something for everyone, including:

  • A new Visitor Centre, boasting displays, a shop, refreshments and toilets
  • Short walking distance to Abbey House Museum
  • Stunning parkland and woodland trail
  • Recreational facilities, including playing fields and tennis courts

Uncover the story of what life was like for a 12th century monk in the brand new visitor centre.  Interactive displays, reconstructions and audio-visual presentations provide a wealth of information.  See the reconstruction of the Laybrother’s toilet and make your own floor pattern using the medieval tiles.


Wander from the visitor centre into the rest of the Abbey. Experience the life of a medieval monk.  Find out where and when they cooked, ate their meals, prayed and slept.  Step back in time and imagine how different life was for the monks compared to today.  Admire the ancient stone work conserved to last another 850 years.


Visit Kirkstall Abbey and learn why the Laybrothers were so important to the monks.  Discover how the use of the Abbey has changed over the centuries. Find out why the main road to Leeds ran straight through the church!


Relax at Kirkstall Abbey and spend some time in the beautifully landscaped grounds - perfect for dog walking, jogging, cycling…or even a picnic next to the river.  There is also a choice of outdoor activities, including tennis, rugby and football as well as spectacular events such as the Shakespeare Festival.
