Leeds' ChildLine Yorkshire & North EastChildLine Every day, ChildLine Yorkshire & North East receives calls from around 650 children seeking comfort, advice or protection. However, enormous demand means that many more children are unable to reach one of our volunteer counsellors. With your help, we can ensure these children get through to the vital support, advice and protection they need. Eleven-year-old Josh rang ChildLine because he received a beating from his father every time the football team he supported lost a match. His mum had died a year earlier from cancer and he was reluctant to tell anyone about his dad’s behaviour, in case the police got involved and his father ended up in prison. ‘Dad gets really angry and hurts me,’ he said. ‘But when they win, he’s always really nice. I don’t know what to do. I hate him when he hits me but I love him the rest of the time.’ Josh’s counsellor asked if there was an adult who he could talk to and helped him to decide what he would say. The result of ChildLine’s support was that Josh’s dad sought help and – although Josh lived with his aunt for a while ultimately he was able to move back in with his dad. And Josh rang back to tell us, ‘ChildLine really helped me sort out how mixed up I felt.’ It costs ChildLine just £38 to counsel a child like Josh and a donation of £3 enables us to answer one more call.
