Royal Armouries

royalarmouries1.jpgThe Royal Armouries Museum Leeds is a modern attraction that was opened to the public in 1996, initially as an overflow to items that were held in the Tower of London but never displayed. Entry to the Royal Armouries Museum Leeds is free although very occasionally certain events and activities can incur a small surcharge. There is a tremendous variety on display around the building and there are several presentations, talks and events that take place during the day normally. The Royal Armouries Museum Leeds is housed in a breathtaking glass and steel structure situated near the Leeds canals in an attractive area of the city in Clarence Dock.

Royal Armouries Museum Leeds is, in essence, home to the national collection of arms and armour. They care for and maintain the items, and maintain a scholarly interest in their collection and work to increase their knowledge of them in an effort to maintain this knowledge to be passed on to other generations. There are a number of support and conservation groups based at the Royal Armouries Museum Leeds and they have acted as consultants on a wide variety of projects, from standard conservation tasks to television and film roles. Royal Armouries Museum Leeds also takes an active role in the community and have spearheaded several campaigns tackling knife crime.

royalarmouries2.jpgThroughout the summer season there are public jousting events and displays in the famous Tiltyard. Here visitors can enjoy the spectacle of knights jousting and engaging in combat, and there are also regular falconry displays involving a variety of birds of prey. Be warned, some audience participation is encouraged in the Tiltyard, and it can be a breathtaking sight to behold! Horsemanship displays and jousting displays are also commonplace in the Royal Armouries Museum Leeds Tiltyard, and seasonal displays include things such as "the art of hunting by horseback in the Tutor Times". At Easter each year an international four day competition takes place between four jousting teams, this event often attracts record crowds.

There are some 70,000 relics and items on display at
the Royal Armouries Museum Leeds dating from thousands of years old to items created in modern times. As well as the weapons and antiquities the Royal Armouries Museum Leeds is also home to a variety of fine arts and archival material, particularly relating to the Tower of London. There are also some 30,000 books and leaflets gathered from throughout history that are held for reference purposes. No trip to Leeds is complete without a visit to the Royal Armouries Museum, it is a fantastic day out with something for the whole family to enjoy.
